Throughout history, the arranging of a funeral has been one of the most difficult tasks many people have had to face. Our founders believed that it doesn't always have to be this way; that when people have an idea of what they want and what they can expect from a funeral professional, they have taken an important first step towards making a difficult task easier on themselves and those they love. It was in this tradition that in 1883, James Lafayette Halsted and his sons, Major William A, James L., Jr., John and Eminel B. Halsted embarked into the business of "undertaking" these tasks for others. Originally located at 946 Mission Street in San Francisco, Halsted & Company burned in the 1906 earthquake and moved temporarily to the Western Addition, then re-located to its present location at 1123 Sutter Street in 1926.
